Argentina

Famous for its steak, tango and football, Argentina is the eighth-largest country in the world full of wildlife, adventure and culture, with an immense terrain ranging from glacial lakes and mountain regions to the fertile plains of Pampas. Waving is considered rude so be sure to perfect the ‘cheek kiss’ before you go.

Buenos Aires province, with two mountain ranges and a population of 14 million, is slightly larger than Italy and home to the country’s capital. The bright and bustling cosmopolitan capital of Buenos Aires sits on the south-east coast basking in its rich cultural lifestyle and European-style architecture. It boasts many barrios (neighbourhoods) which differ from one to the next – some are chic, trendy and filled with boutiques and restaurants, while others are steeped in local history punctuated with cobbled streets and traditional sights.

Take a seat, soak up the unique atmosphere and people watch as the porteños (residents of Buenos Aires) go about their daily lives in a flash of colour and bustle. As you’d expect, beef is a prominent feature on most menus and parillas (steak restaurants) are a common sight. If beef’s not your flavour of choice, there’s a huge variety of ethnic cuisine on offer in Argentina - just be sure to wash it all down with some famous Argentine wine.

Head to the sub-tropical north and witness the Iguassa Falls, arguably one of the most phenomenal sights in the world. There’s a great 275 individual falls covering a 2.7km stretch, and the unfathomable Devil’s Throat is the most impressive - 82 metres high and 700 metres long, it marks the border between Argentina and Brazil.

With its climate, diversity, culture, wildlife and natural wonders, Argentina is much more than the large cattle ranch some may think it to be. It definitely won’t leave you disappointed. Just remember to leave plenty of space in your suitcase for souvenirs.
