Swallows Nest at dusk | Ukraine, Moldova and Crimea Tour

Ukraine

A land of vast steppes and forests, the Ukraine is also known as the birthplace of Russian Christianity. It was here in AD 978 that Prince Vladimir declared his conversion to the Greek Orthodox faith. Despite the deprivation of the Communist era following the Russian Revolution and devastation of WWII, the Ukraine today is a beautiful and fascinating country where history beckons at every turn. The autonomous Crimean Peninsula is also rich in natural and historical wonders - rolling, fertile countryside, with orchards and vineyards, give way to the forested gorges and green mountains that plunge down to the sun-drenched resorts of the Black Sea.

Begin your sightseeing in the capital of Kiev, the famed ‘City of a Thousand Domes’. From the summit of Vladimir Hill there’s a breathtaking panorama over the gilded spires of the city and wide River Dnieper. Yaroslav the Wise dedicated St Sophia's Cathedral in 1037, its interior wonderfully decorated with dazzling mosaics and frescoes. St Andrew's Church is a perfectly- proportioned masterpiece completed in 1753. Drive along Kiev's fashionable main thoroughfare Khreschatyk, past the remains of the 11th century city walls, to the Monastery of the Caves, considered among the most inspirational and beautiful Christian shrines in the world. Don’t miss the national war museum nestled at the titanium toes of the monolithic Motherland monument, (or ‘Brezhnev’s Daughter’ as she is known locally). In neighbouring Crimea, expect to find castles, Greek ruins, secret Soviet stuff and imperial palaces stalked by the ghosts of Churchill, Stalin and Roosevelt.
